Barry L. Stiefel, "Difficult Memorials: Historic Synagogues from the Days of Slavery"

Partner Program of Interest:

Historic sites and their memorialization provide important spaces to understand ourselves and our history--especially when those subjects are difficult.  Come learn about the first and last synagogues built in the Americas using slave labor: Zur Israel in Dutch Recife (1640) and Beth Elohim in Charleston (1840).  These case studies provide both challenges and rewards in dealing with history's painful chapters.

Born and raised in Ann Arbor and an EMU alummus, Barry L. Stiefel, Ph.D. is a professor of historic preservation and community planning at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. He is the author of Monuments of Diverse Heritage in Early America: Placemaking and Preservation by Black, Indigenous, and Jewish Peoples (Amsterdam University), which explores a more inclusive history on the preservation of historic sites.
