Ilya Kreines, "In Between City": Film Screening and Director Talk

Jewish collective memory has allowed Jews to maintain a deep sense of community throughout the ages. Join us for screening of the short film, In Between City, and a conversation with its director and creator, Ilya Kreines.

In Between City (00:08:50) imitates a poetic wandering through a fictional Central European city and its memory, blurring reality and fiction.  It is constructed from a collection of fragments, stories, images, and impressions, including of the vanished Jewish worlds it once contained.  Kreines will also discuss his ground-breaking print animation technique, using stamps carved from erasers.  (In Between City is included in the shorts competition of the 2025 Ann Arbor Film Festival and will be screened there Friday night, March 28.)

About the director: Ilya Kreines is a multimedia artist based between Jerusalem and Prague. He was born in Moscow and moved to Israel in 1999. In 2023 he received an MFA degree in illustration and graphics from UMPRUM (Czech Republic) after receiving a bachelor's degree in visual communication from Bezalel Academy (Israel).
